On Wednesday we will do the two-week weigh in and more pictures/blog update. Their eyes will probably be open by then so we will do more face shots.

 

 

ONE WEEK OLD!!!

First week has passed and the puppies are doing soooo well.  Weights today range from 22 oz (patched boy) down to 12 oz for the littlest girl.  But - what is even more important is that all of them have doubled their birth weight (which is the goal for the first week). Good  momma Jazz!!!!
The all had their nails trimmed this morning so that their long nails will not scratch Jazz's tummy or each other. This will be done weekly til it is time for them to leave for their new homes.
Today we took face shots of each pup....for now they are identified by their collar color, but soon we will have the litter theme and each will have a litter name.  Probably on Sunday when I do the next update.

UPDATE

Puppies are doing soooo well; all are nice and fat and vigorous. Jazz is very relaxed with them and does not even mind her housemate - Bubbles - spending time in the nursery with us. 

Soon you will be able to see spots; we can see them on their tummies and under their hair but they do not show up in the pictures.

Next update will be on Wednesday when all the puppies will get their one-week weighing and also have their first mani-pedi!  We plan to take face shots of each puppy.  Next week we will unveil the theme for the litter and each puppy will have a litter name.

PUPPIES ARE DOING WELL....

Smallest girl has gained more weight and she is now at 8.5 ounces!  She is a most vigorous nurser and is quite strong and active.  HAPPY DANCE!!!!

As you can see, all the puppies are already showing filled in noses and eye trim (even tho their eyes are still closed).

My next visit to the pups will be on Monday so will do another update then.

DAY TWO

Some sad news to report this time.  The tiniest girl passed early this morning.  Overnight she began to fail and Jazz kept licking her hoping to have her respond better, but this licking only worked to hasten things along since it made her chilled; we did put her into the incubator/heating box but she was not breathing properly and we knew from experience that it was not going to be a positive outcome.  She passed quietly and peacefully and now is on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge with all the other Karefree dogs who were there waiting for her.

On a more upbeat note; the other little girl has gained weight already and is now up to 7 oz (from 5.9 oz) and this is very good news since all puppies lose some weight the first 24 hours.  Also good is that the first critical period has now passed - the first 24 hours is a time when bad things can more easily affect the newborns.

PUPPIES ARE HERE!!!!

PUPPIES WERE BORN THIS MORNING!  First one was born at 12:55 am and last one at 7:05 am....we have 9 pups - 5 girls and 4 boys.  Weights ranged from 10.2 oz down thru 9,1, 8.8, 7.4,7.0, 5.9 and 5.3. The two smallest are strong and vigorous and nursing well, but we watch them very closely and make sure they get prime seats at the milk bar. Jazz is an excellent momma dog and is working hard at keeping them all clean.  One boy, the largest and last one born, is a "patch" which means he has a black spot already....here is a picture of him...the patch is on the top of his head.

And Jay is relaxing at home and all ready to hand out cigars and a drink  to celebrate!

I will be visiting the pups tomorrow and will try to take better pictures to show the pups better and the blog will be updated at least twice a week from now on.

Here is Jazz with just a few days to go til delivery time....

and here is the whelping (delivery) room where the puppies will be born and raised.....Jazz is checking it all out and approves...we especially like the sunshine that comes into this room.

JAZZ CONTINUES TO EXPAND! 

Here is the x-ray taken this morning; it shows 7 skeletons easily (if you have the vet pointing them out to you!) and quite possibly another one or two partially seen.
